Tai Chi Chuan
Tai Chi Chuan is a kind of high-level human culture which combines Han nationality’s dialectical theoretical thinking, martial arts, art, traditional Chinese medical science and so on. In the middle of the 17th century, Chen Wangting (1580–1660), a stuntman from Chenjiagou of Henan province, combined Wudang Tai Chi with the boxing inherited from his forebears. The combination of two kinds of fist positions couple hardness with softness, with the idea of external and internal cultivation. Chen named it Chen-style Tai Chi Chuan.
In the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, Yang Luchan (1799–1872), an ordinary wage earner of a traditional Chinese medicine store, Zhonghetang, got a rare opportunity to work in Chenjiagou——the birthplace of Chen-style Tai Chi Chuan. Yang caught the sight that Chen Changxing, one of the inheritors of Chen-style Tai Chi Chuan, was teaching Tai Chi Chuan to his students Tai chi t-shirts. With great admiration, Yang watched the Tai Chi Chuan taught by Chen and learnt it by heart secretly. He had actually made some accomplishment in the course of time. But it finally came to light by Chen. To Yang’s surprise, Chen allowed him to study Tai Chi Chuan and even taught him instead of punish him. After Yang’s study in Tai Chi Chuan, he went to Beijing and simplified the fist position. His son and grandson modified it and named it Yang-style Tai Chi Chuan. Its postures have slow, steady, expansive and soft movements suitable for general practitioners, so that it is widely practiced nowadays. In addition, the schools of Tai Chi Chuan also included Wu-style, Zhao-style, Sun-style, and so on.
