To Chinese people, Tai Chi Chuan is not an unfamiliar word. Although the formation of the system could be traced back to the 12th century, in contemporary China it still enjoys great popularity, and its reputation has already spread across the ocean to the west. The polarized "Yin and Yang" conception is also adopted to present the meaning of striking the dedicate balance both physically and spiritually in order to reach "harmony", which is another key word in ancient Chinese philosophy.

There are five major styles of Tai Chi Chuan, naming after each one's family name of its original master. They are: Chen-style of Chen Wangting, Yang-style of Yang Luchan, Wu-style of Wu Yuhsiang, Wu-style of Wu Chuanyu and his son Wu Chienchuan, and Sun-style of Sun Lutang.  During its long history, dozens of styles have been evolved. However, it should be noted that, in spite of the detailed differences in their practical training forms and body postures, the fundamental theories or basic principles are generally acknowledged and shared.
